Mrs. Spink is a local lady who inherited a python skin which dates over one hundred years old. Brought back to England from Africa after the First World War by a family member, the skin was kept in a drawer until passed to Mrs. Spink by her Mother.

“ Denise’s service at Deni-Deni was exceptional; she kept me fully up to date with the making of my handbag. She invited me to choose from various designs; I knew of the different stages during the process of transforming my Grandmother’s python skin into a beautiful bag. I was overly happy with the finished product, and I think that Denise is a brilliant craftsperson; therefore I would recommend her service to my friends and relatives. Thank you so much ”

Mrs Spink

The Brief

The brief was simply to make a bag from the skin. For such an important skin this wasn’t simple at all. Mrs Spink is 5 foot and in her retirement years, so the handbag needed to be sensitive to her stature and age. Through discussion, there were certain elements that formed the basis of the design. A day bag to be used on special occasions, grab handles with no strap, a secure closure, and an inner pocket. The colouring of the skin lent itself to gold fittings although Mrs Spink did not want a lot of ‘bling’ and we agreed that the lining would look amazing made in lamb nappa.

What We Did

The narrow width of the skin meant the bag needed to utilise the widest area of the python skin if the front and back panels were to be kept whole. The scale and dimensions of the bag were therefore determined and finalised with some ‘fitting’ sessions using card mock ups. The skin hung in the studio while Denise got her head around exactly how she was going to make the bag as there was no room for error. Once finished, Mrs Spinks certificate of authenticity lay placed within the inner lid of a custom made presentation box.
