One of the pleasures in what we do here is the pure diversity of work. I am very lucky to have been a young student whilst there was still a school teaching the old traditional skills of the leather goods trade. There wasn’t a class for watch straps per say but I have learnt enough over my years and have a clever Son working alongside me who thrives on a challenge. We have made numerous watch straps over time and so when this recent commission came on board there was little development involved. It’s a tricky and delicate operation with a lot of hand work and waiting patiently for glue to cure. I wish I had taken a before and after shot, our client had struggled to find a new strap and had tried dying the leather of her existing one. Carrying so much stock of leather can be a pain sometimes but boy does it come in handy when you’re put on the spot to show customers some choices. I am amazed that there seems little or no choice for a refined bespoke watch strap in the UK. A quick search came up with many men’s straps but no ladies made in the manner we do. Nice to know we are keeping our game up.
